Our Village Stores is Under threat!!After only a year of trading since reopening in 2008, last year the Village stores closed and the business has been up for sale ever since. Now, the owners of the Village Stores have applied for a Change of Use planning Application to turn the Shop into residential use. Details here While we all have a great deal of sympathy for the Store owners position, but is this once thriving business is a valuable Village resource that needs preserving? Or should we let go without a fight? The store owner argues that the business is not viable, perhaps this has been the case. However, it could be suggested that in order for a business to compete effectively it needs to be open comparable hours with it's rivals (not the limited hours as was the case when it was trading most recently). Perhaps the reason the business has not sold in the last year has more to do with the unprecedented unstable economic climate that we are currently experiencing rather than the actual viability of the business? Given that the Nisa Store in Lapford Garage has assumed the role of the general store for the village, could the Village Stores be used a shop for a different purpose rather than a General Store? Is there anything we as a Village can do to save the Store? One thing is for sure, once it is gone, it will be gone forever. Whatever your view, make your Parish Councillors aware!
